Angela Merkel has been in office for 16 years and has been an extraordinary force for stability in the West. The end of her chancellorship injects uncertainty on both sides of the Atlantic about the general course and the new champions who may fill the gap her departure will create.
The financial crisis, Brexit, the pandemic and the rise of authoritarian regimes have repeatedly challenged the values of the European Union. After a turbulent 2020 election cycle, the US is nearly one year into a new administration that is managing both domestic and international crises.
